Mushrooms 🍄

I LOOOVE mushrooms. If you haven’t washed Fantastic Fungi (Netflix) this is your sign to go and watch it now.

Not only can mushrooms taste almost exactly like meat (if you are trying to reduce your meat consumption) but they have SO many health benefits and have even been scientifically proven to reduce you risk of countless diseases.

The Health Benefits of Mushrooms and Functional Mushroom Supplements

Mushrooms have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and cooking, and more recently, they have gained popularity for their potential health benefits. These fungi are not only delicious additions to a meal, but they also offer a wealth of nutrients and bioactive compounds that can support overall well-being. In addition, functional mushroom supplements have become a popular way to incorporate the benefits of these fungi into daily routines with ease. Let’s explore the health benefits of mushrooms and how functional mushroom supplements can be a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Nutrient-Rich Powerhouses

Mushrooms are low in calories and fat while being rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For example, they are a good source of B vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid, which are important for energy production and the maintenance of healthy skin. Moreover, certain types of mushrooms, such as shiitake and maitake, contain ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant that may help protect the body's cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Immune System Support

Functional mushrooms, such as reishi, chaga, and cordyceps, have been studied for their potential to support immune function. These mushrooms contain compounds that can help modulate the immune system, promoting a balanced and robust response to challenges. This immune-supporting property makes them popular choices for individuals looking to maintain overall wellness, especially during times of increased susceptibility to illness.

Adaptogenic and Stress-Modulating Properties

Another fascinating aspect of functional mushrooms is their adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are natural substances that may help the body adapt to stress and promote a sense of balance. For example, reishi mushrooms have been traditionally used to support calmness and relaxation, while cordyceps are known for their potential to enhance endurance and combat fatigue. By incorporating these mushrooms into one's routine, individuals may experience support for their physical and mental resilience.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Several mushrooms, including lion's mane and turkey tail, contain compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, which are linked to various chronic health conditions. By consuming mushrooms or mushroom supplements rich in these beneficial compounds, individuals may help support their body's natural defense mechanisms against these harmful processes.

Incorporating Functional Mushroom Supplements

While whole mushrooms can be enjoyed in a variety of culinary dishes, incorporating functional mushroom supplements into one's daily routine provides a convenient and concentrated way to reap their health benefits. These supplements are available in various forms, including capsules, powders, and tinctures, making them easy to integrate into different lifestyles and preferences. When choosing a functional mushroom supplement, it is important to select high-quality products from reputable sources to ensure their purity and efficacy. My favourite mushroom supplements are from Dirtea. I love drinking my vitamins (hydration plus health, win win) and Dirtea makes delicious mushroom mixes that can be added to your coffee, smoothie, oats or enjoyed alone!

Here are some of the products I’ve tried and love from them:

My FAVOURITE the matcha super blend: combines 100% pure ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha (foraged in the Shizuoka Region of Japan) with Lion’s mane, Tremella and Reishi… What a super blend! Lions mane: improve brain power, including memory, focus and mental clarity, while aiding digestion. Tremella: an inside-out approach to beauty, it may help increase the body’s production of hyaluronic acid and collagen whilst thickening hair, strengthening nails and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Reishi (AKA the ZEN mushroom: all-day soothing wonder that will provide an overall relaxed state. It may help calm the nervous system, support the immune system and promote deep sleep.

Cordycepsm mushroom powder: may improve physical performance as well as increase energy levels. It provides vitality throughout the day and boosts endurance during a workout. Since I’ve started taking this my yoga practice has reached new heights. I usually mix it with the Chaga powder below.

Chaga: is a great source of natural long-lasting energy without the caffeine or crashes. It's the highest source of natural antioxidants on Earth and may also fortify your immune system and may promote healthy skin.

If supplements aren’t for you but you still want to get the health benefits of mushrooms you can try adding more to your diet and they are so easy to prepare! (Recipe here).
